In 1940 Arlie Bailey left his studies in Cambridge to start work on radar at the Air Defence Experimental Establishment (ADEE) in Christchurch for the Army.  He later moved with the establishment to Pale Manor Farm in Malvern (later called North Site).  After a period in the US at Fort Monmouth, he moved to the Government Communications Headquarters in Cheltenham starting a radio research group in 1957.
