Extract from Royal Society biography (see links below):
"Between 1940 and 1945 he worked at the Telecommunications Research Establishment first at Swanage and later at Malvern, his particular responsibility being microwave radar systems.  His engineering talent and skills were well recognized by this stage, so much so that his seniors at Malvern, notably Herbert Skinner and Arthur Starr, succeeded in obtaining his promotion into the Scientific Class of the Civil Service, in spite of the absence of the 'necessary' paper qualifications."

He married Renie Warburton in 1943.  

After the war he worked at the Atomic Energy Research Establishment, Harwell.  In 1953 he moved to CERN, Geneva where he subsequently became Director.
